Photo-oxidative processes are thought to be involved in the reaction of skin under UV irradiation leading to oxidative damage, DNA damage and detrimental effects on skin health. There is increasing evidence that dietary antioxidants such as carotenoids protect against photo-oxidative reactions and may be useful in reducing the detrimental effects related to photo-oxidative stress. Following dietary intervention with beta carotene and tomato extract containing lycopene, protection against UV-induced erythema was observed (10). To answer the question whether lycopene alone is responsible for this skin protective effect an additional study was designed. The studies below might prove that Synergistic effects of lycopene, phytofluene and phytoene might be operative. Also, beta carotene, which is present in the tomato based preparations. might have contributed to protection to some extent. Natural Lycopene from tomato was also found protective against exercise-induced asthma. In addition, treatment with tomato extract was found to reduce airway neutrophil influx and sputum neutrophil elastase activity in asthmatic adults.
